Strategic Business Planning Examples Unisys - Supply Chain Operations (SCO) For 10 years, I was involved in facilitating strategic business planning for a division of Unisys, Supply Chain Operations (SCO), that involved more than 600 employees, nationwide. Unisys Corporation is a worldwide information technology services and solutions company. Strategic business planning efforts were focused on the supply chain – enhancing its competitiveness, understanding and delivering greater value to customers, and addressing SCO's priorities of building flexibility, reducing cost, and growing profitable revenue. While planning processes evolved over the years, they always included the involvement of every single employee in the SCO operation. Initially this involvement occurred through business planning sessions, In recent years, this valuable employee input was obtained through one-day World Cafes [see a description of this tool, here]. Each year, a written plan was developed, with individual employee goals and objectives then developed to support the plan. Quarterly dashboard reports and All Hands meetings were used to report progress. The process has been recognized on numerous occasions for supporting leadership’s goal of aligning business requirements with employee performance. See one of the plans, here
Community Health Improvement Partners (CHIP) CHIP is a collaborative of San Diego health care systems, hospitals, community clinics, insurers, physicians, universities, community benefit organizations and the County of San Diego, all dedicated to a common vision. To assist CHIP in becoming self-sustaining and ensuring that it was applying its resources most effectively, The CAPSTONE Group was asked to (1) develop a diagnostic assessment process for current projects and program categories so that effort is focused on the right activities and (2) lead the development of a 3-5 year strategic plan, with appropriate outcome measures and periodic reporting process. In Phase 1, a step-by-step process was developed to define and apply assessment criteria and create recommendations as to which program efforts should be continued, which should be altered in some way, and which should be eliminated. Tasks accomplished in Phase 2, included: - Developing values as a yardstick for future program development
- Reframing CHIP’s mission and vision to ensure that CHIP’s role in the community can be understood and articulated
- Creating three-year goals, against which a set of yearly objectives will be developed
- Crafting strategic initiatives
